A vital creative period
For nearly 2 years, between 1984 and 1985, the two artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol mixed their worlds to initiate a dialogue from which a very large number of major works would emerge. Today, the Fondation Louis Vuitton returns to this fundamental moment in the creative journey of the two creatives, while setting it in its context of the artistic atmosphere of New York in the 1980s. The exhibition is therefore an enlightening way to rediscover these two artistic personalities and perceive the processes at work in their interactions.
From two artists to creations
Among the 300 works and documents exhibited for this event, 80 canvases are signed by four hands. The others illustrate the journey of the two painters towards this final inspiration. The tour opens with an impressive series of portraits of Warhol by Basquiat and vice versa and continues with a series produced with the Italian painter Francesco Clemente. It ends in apotheosis with major and impressive works such as The African Mask and the sculpture Ten Punching Bags (The Last Supper).
