Over the years, Paris has gained a well-deserved reputation as the world’s leading city of fashion. The Palais Galliera, the Fashion Museum of the City of Paris, offers an evolving vision of this cultural phenomenon. Recently closed for renovation, it reopens next spring with a temporary exhibition featuring the timeless creations of the Parisian queen of elegance, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. Don’t miss this fascinating retrospective during your next stay at the Roch Hotel & Spa.
The Palais Galliera relaunch
In 1878, the Duchess Galliera declared that she wanted to leave her collection of works of art to the City of Paris, provided that a dedicated museum could be built. Many years later and despite multiple setbacks and complications, the Palais Galliera was opened. With its monumental windows and beautiful colonnades, the building is typical of the Beaux-Arts style very much in vogue at the time. Later, as the Fashion Museum of the City of Paris, it became a victim of its own success. It was too small to accommodate its vast collections and numerous visitors. Thus, work to transform the vaulted cellars into exhibition galleries is to be completed by spring 2020.
Gabrielle Chanel; Fashion Manifesto
To celebrate this new page in its history, the Palais Galliera is devoting an exhibition to the legendary fashion designer Gabrielle Chanel. Through dozens of clothes on display, including her famous comeback collection from the 1950s, as well as accessories, jewellery and perfumes, you will be immersed in the world and vision of the great Parisian priestess of style and elegance. Fascinating for fashion buffs, this exhibition will also interest casual visitors due to the diversity of the displays and their social history aspects.
In its newly renovated spaces, the Palais Galliera is offering an exhibition dedicated to Gabrielle Chanel to celebrate its reopening. Take advantage of your stay at the Roch to discover it all!
